Fred Eaglesmith receives Railway Hall of Fame honor

24/07/2012

Fred Eaglesmith was inducted into the North American Railway Hall of Fame in St. Thomas, Ontario last month.

Recognized in the Railway Art Forms and Events category, Eaglesmith will be presented with the honor Aug. 16 during the 18th Annual Fred Eaglesmith Charity Picnic in Aylmer, Ontario.

Eaglesmith's work often reflects the traveling life. Nominated by a fan, he is being inducted, at least in part, because of the prominence of railway themes in his music.

The sixth of nine children born into a strictly religious farming family, Eaglesmith was 15 when he hopped his first train and began chasing his dreams as a performer. Singing about trains has been extended to singing on trains, as his penchant for traveling rail shows has included long hauls with carloads of fans from Vancouver to Toronto, New Mexico to Colorado and more. His annual charity picnic opens this year with a barbeque at St. Thomas' Canadian Southern Railway Station (August 16), at which his induction will be celebrated. He was unable to attend the June ceremony.

Eaglesmith continues to tour in support of his album "6 Volts." The 2012 Route 66 Tin Can Caravan will take the eclectic and electrified Eaglesmith experience to new levels during an 18-day Chicago-to-Santa Monica journey in September. Tour dates are:
